Overview

A new Selected to commemorate the centenary of Scotland’s first official Makar in modern times, Edwin Morgan.

Author Biography

Edwin Morgan (1920-2010) was Scotland’s first national poet —Scotland’s version of the Poet Laureate—and one of the best-loved and most significant poets of the twentieth century. Widely recognised as the most influential poet of his generation, Morgan produced poetry of extraordinary range and emotional reach and remained deeply committed to his home city of Glasgow. On his 89th birthday he opened the Edwin Morgan Archive of printed and recorded material at the Scottish Poetry Library. Hamish Whyte was born in Giffnock, Renfrewshire, and worked as a librarian and bibliographer in Glasgow before moving to Edinburgh in 2004. For more than thirty-five years he has run Mariscat Press. Whyte has edited anthologies of Scottish poetry and several issues of New Writing Scotland. He has also published, edited, and written on his friend Edwin Morgan, Scotland’s first National Poet. Whyte’s own poetry has appeared in various Scottish magazines, he has many pamphlets to his name, and three full collections have been published by Shoestring Press.
